The lord be with you. A reading of the holy gospel according to Mark. In the city of Capernaum, that's up in the lake area on the western shore of the lake, Jesus entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day and he began to teach. The people hearing him were spellbound. They were spellbound by his teaching because he taught with authority and not like the scribes.

Now there appeared in their synagogue, a man with an unclean spirit that shrieked out, what do you want of us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the holy one of God. Jesus rebuked him sharply. Be quiet.

Come out of the man. At that, the unclean spirit convulsed the man violently, and with a loud shriek came out of him. All who saw it were amazed. They began to ask one another, what does it all mean? A completely new teaching in a spirit of authority.

He gives orders to unclean spirits and they obey him. From that day on, the reputation of Jesus spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. This is the gospel of the lord.
